The hour or so long tour took us inside the grand halls and well-preserved chambers. The small port town of Cochem is situated in the western region of Germany and is home to just under 5,000 people. Though it is small in size, it is large in history, old world charm and things to do, like visiting it’s gorgeous hilltop castle—Reichsburg. For a more active excursion, you can opt for a moderate hike to the Landshut Castle (it’s an included one too!).
Popular Cruise Ships
And you’ll have the opportunity to visit it during your river cruise. Boat cruises are available most days on the Mosel from early April (or Easter if it falls in March) to late October. Weekends usually have more cruises while the lowest number of cruises are on Mondays. During the main season from May to September, cruises depart every day of the week. More interesting options, including biking and wine tastings, are also only available in the main season.
Tour Planner
So be prepared to take a bit of rough with a lot of smooth while savoring fine Riesling wines and venturing ashore to explore wonderful places like Trier, Germany's oldest city. But there is also a casino, some lovely parks, good shopping and a water-powered funicular that transports you to the views on top of Neroberg Hill. One personal favorite thing in the castle was the beautiful medieval paintings in the dining hall and castle chapel. The color and detail of these well-preserved paintings is incredible. You can only visit the castle by tour where you will be shown things like the Gothic Hall, the Knight’s Stairway, the Romanesque Residential Apartments, The Great Battery, a dungeon, a torture room and more. Other notable things to do in Koblenz are to wander the lovely Old Town (Aldstadt) and explore the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
Departure
In Koblenz, the giant equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I watches over the confluence of the two rivers at Deutsches Eck. Here, witness nature’s wonder as the Moselle's pale green waters mingle with the dark blues of the Rhine. For a more dramatic view, hop a cable car to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress high above Koblenz and gaze upon the entire landscape. Carve out an intricate path along one of Germany’s most picturesque river valleys. Excursion cruises from Trier go downriver to Bernkastel-Kues (over four hours each way) or upstream and into the Saar River to Saarburg (two hours).
The Rhine, Swiss Alps & Amsterdam
Take in all this city has to offer, from the Roman Porta Nigra and Forum Baths to the enchanting Dreikönigshaus, or House of the Three Magi. Yes, please keep me updated with the latest special offers, travel inspiration, product updates, and event invites. The most frequent excursion on the Moselle from Cochem is to Beilstein (via Ernst , Bruttig, and Schleuse Frankel) — around an hour each way. This is the only routing on this part of the Moselle where it is possible to interrupt a cruise and continue with a later boat. Cruises in winter are limited but some are available during the romantic Advent and Christmas market seasons, especially in Bernkastel and Trier. Tickets for the panorama cruise of KD in Cochem are easy to buy online (and usually a bit cheaper).
Best Times to Cruise on the Mosel
Wine enthusiasts will find ample opportunities to enjoy a local glass in a cozy tavern or winery. Stroll through the old town and feel like you’re walking through the pages of time. Towering over Cochem, the Gothic Revival castle has a long history tied closely to the town.
Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland. Take a cruise along the Moselle River and glide through the lovely landscape of sunlit vineyards and idyllic villages.

Achingly Beautiful Bernkastel-Kues
Cochem, on the bank of the Moselle, is another port of call on your Rhine cruise, which will take you onto the Moselle. The town’s landmark is undoubtedly the famous Reichsburg, a splendid castle that towers above the river. But did you know that the West German government had a secret bunker built here for its federal bank?
This castle ruins is one of the oldest structures in the Moselle, perched upon the remnants of a fort that dates back to the 4th or 5th century. We opted for the Walking and Wines in Bernkastel tour, but had plenty of time after to navigate our way to Landshut Castle on our own. We got to squeeze in one more included excursion on this day, and it was a good one— a night tour of the ancient city of Trier. Located in southwestern Germany near the borders of Luxembourg and France, Trier has a rich history that spans over two millennia (16 BC), making it one of the country’s oldest cities.
However, for other cruises buy tickets from kiosks at major stops or directly on the boat. Tickets may be bought online too but for Kolb it is still a cumbersome process. Return tickets for Moselle River cruises are only marginally more expensive than one-way fares. On long cruises such as Cochem to Koblenz or Traben-Trarbach, the one-way fare is around €28 (return €39). Panorama cruises are usually around €13 for one-hour cruises or €20 for two-hour cruises. The wine events are great fun, with traditional German oompah bands, a fairground atmosphere and excellent food and wine.
Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. Please refer to the Tauck Travel Protection Product section above for information on the coverage we can offer you.

Combining a bike ride, boat cruise, and wine tasting is a popular day-trip tour on the Mosel. Cochem, where the beautiful Reichsburg (Imperial Castle) towers over the city and Moselle Valley, is one of the best Mosel towns for day trips and sightseeing riverboat cruises. Kolb and Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) both have several sightseeing panorama cruises per day.
